Aunt Mary's Soft Sugar Cookies

Aunt Mary's Soft Sugar Cookies

Picture this: the scent of warm butter, laughter, Christmas decorations, and the unmistakable mint green Tupperware bowl filled with the softest sugar cookies.

That was the scene when we would visit my Aunt Mary’s house. Soft and fluffy with red and green sprinkles, her cookies were a big part of our festive celebrations.

I’d eat as many as my mom would allow and after eating four or five, my Aunt would always wink at me and then hand me the Tupperware bowl for just one more.

One year, as we were saying our goodbyes, she hugged me and whispered in my ear. “Next year, I’ll teach you how to make the cookies” while handing me a secret bag of cookies to go!

Now, I have continued the tradition of making my Aunt’s sugar cookies each year with my kids.

Today I thought I would share her recipe with you and I bet they will become one of your family’s favorites.

These delicious sour cream sugar cookies have a delicate and pillow-like texture and they are so easy to make. There is no need for rolling out dough, cutting, or even frosting them. You can even make them at other times of the year and change the color of the sprinkles.

What makes these cookies so good and soft is— the sour cream. It adds a lightweight airy texture with just the right amount of sweetness.

Making Christmas cookies during the holidays has always been nostalgic for me. I hope my story has stirred up fond recollections of your own, and reminded you of the special moments and people you share those sweet and delicious treats with.

Now go make these delicious cookies to enjoy and share!

Aunt Mary’s Soft Sugar Cookies

Ingredients:

½ Cup Butter

1 ½ Cups Sugar

2 Eggs

1 Teaspoon Vanilla

3 Cups Flour

½ Teaspoon Baking Powder

½ Teaspoon Baking Soda

1 Cup Sour Cream

Directions:

  1. Cream butter to the consistency of mayonnaise.
  2. Add sugar gradually while continuing to cream.
  3. Add eggs one at a time, beating well.
  4. After each addition, add vanilla and beat until light and fluffy. Mix and sift flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda.
  5. Add the creamed mixture to the dry ingredients alternating with sour cream. Begin and end with dry ingredients.
  6. Drop a heaping teaspoon on a well-greased cookie sheet.
  7. Sprinkle the tops with red or green colored sugar.

Bake at 400 for 10 to 12 Minutes.
