It's time to reminisce back to those magical December mornings of our youth.
As a child, my mornings started with a burst of excitement, as the countdown to Christmas continued. Part of what made it feel magical was my Advent calendar, giving me a sweet surprise behind each tiny window and confirming it was one day closer to Christmas morning festivities.
As a parent, I continued this magical tradition, watching as my children experienced the same excitement. When they were little, we would start with a simple construction paper chain— and each day, they’d tear off a link.
With a little luck, one afternoon while shopping in one of my favorite thrift stores, I found a truly special find. A handmade red apothecary-style cabinet with gold-painted drawers numbered 1 through 25. Inside each drawer is a beautiful, hand-crafted vintage ornament, to be placed on the skinny green feather tree with red mercury glass garland. It was an advent treasure, untouched and in perfect condition, and of course, it was brought home to become one of our family’s Christmas countdown traditions.
All the years since, my December mornings start with my kids eagerly running downstairs to open a drawer and hang an ornament. By Christmas morning, the feather tree is nearly full, and we top it off with a beautiful star—the final touch!
